The Joy of Internet Radio.

For those who have ever been to my shop one of the first things they will notice is the wide range of music that I listen to. None of it local.
I embrace the wonders and diversity of the human expression in music the world over. Let me introduce you to some of my favorites.

First is WDVX in Knoxville Tennessee http://www.wdvx.com/ The Smoky Mountains is where my wife is from and listening to WDVX is like going home. They play bluegrass, old country, and Fri. night the Blues. You can hear the Almond Brothers, Hank Williams and The Old Crow Medicine Show all in one set. They have a live concert everyday at noon called “The Blue Plate Special” with their own MC diva “Red Hickey” (Only in Tennessee) You’ve got to love it.

Next Stop WWOZ out of New Orleans http://www.wwoz.org/ Their Sunday lineup starts with Hazel the Delta Rambler playing bluegrass then at 1pm. EST. it’s Cajun music and the announcer even speaks Cajun. This is a must listen to show. Followed by an equally interesting show with Your Cousin Dimitri. He plays something different each week but it’s usually old and obscure stuff from the twenties and thirties and starts every show with Marlene Dietrich. I look forward to his show with great anticipation.
Another great station is Carstairs Kitchen Radio out of Canada. Playing Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday, The Boswell Sisters. Just lots of great stuff. However I have been having a hard time connecting to them of late.

On to International Stations.
Listenlive.eu is a web radio directory showcasing over 4000 radio stations from across Europe streaming live on the internet and it lists stations by country. http://www.listenlive.eu/ My favorite station so far is listed under Spain called Son Galicia Radio playing Traditional Galician folk music. If you have never listened to the music of the Celtic region of Spain you are missing some of the most haunting and beautiful music the world over.

The final station I would like to mention is from Istanbul it is last.fm http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/Istanbul+Oriental+Ensemble/similarartists#pane=webRadioPlayer&station=%252Flisten%252Fartist%252FIstanbul%252BOriental%252BEnsemble%252Fsimilarartists
I am listening to it as I write this. Give it a try.

It’s a great big wonderful world full of rich and diverse cultures and the Internet can bring it to us unadulterated. Something in this country we can get no other way. So I encourage you to check out these stations and then begin your own search. Who knows where it will take you. Enjoy the journey.

My next blog will be about the incredible artist I’ve found that I would never have heard of if not for Internet radio.

So until next time as Duke Ellington said, “If it sounds good, it is good”
